Serial quakes rock western Indonesia
JAKARTA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Serial earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 5.0 magnitude struck western parts of Indonesia on Thursday morning, but there were reports of damage or casualty, local meteorology agency said here.
The 5.3-magnitude quake jolted at 07:53 Jakarta time (0053 GMT) with the epicenter at 222 kilometers southwest Sabang town of Acehprovince in northern tip of Sumatra Island and 30 kilometers in depth, an official of the agency said.
About three hours earlier, the 5.0-magnitude quake jolted with epicenter at 92 kilometers southwest Tasikmalaya town of West Java province in Java island and 20 kilometers in depth, the official said.
Indonesia sits at a vulnerable zone, so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates meet that causes frequent volcanic movements.
