繁荣的纽约动物园，是动物们的天堂。饱受动物尊敬的传奇狮子山姆森就是是动物园的焦点之一，威风凛凛的他总爱向动物园的好朋友以及儿子瑞恩讲述年轻时刺激的野外冒险故事。而山姆森正处青春期的反叛儿子瑞恩，无比向往父亲吹嘘的冒险生活，开始厌倦动物园的平静和生活在父亲盛名之下。
一次意外，瑞恩被误送往了非洲的野生大自然，心急如焚的山姆森在朋友们的帮助下，决定踏上寻找儿子的冒险之旅。然而，虽然常常讲述自己壮观的冒险经历，山姆森从来没有踏足过丛林一步，而随行的好友们也不见得能文善武--个头矮小的松鼠、娇生惯养的长颈鹿、脑筋迟钝的大蟒蛇、尖酸刻薄的无尾熊和自高自大的非洲角马，这群身份各异的好朋友必须经过疯狂如野外的城市，抛开之间的矛盾，才能完成危险的拯救任务！

I accept the job of boyfriend number one. Bridget: Benny, only the female orb-weaver spider will date a male one-twentieth her size. Benny: So there's hope! Bridget: And then she eats him.
